Variable Lane Control Scheme
Driven by urban planning layouts and soaring land values in central districts, a spatial pattern has emerged where workplaces concentrate in city centers while residential areas are located in peripheral zones. This urban structure causes severe tidal flow effects during morning/evening peak hours, characterized by severe congestion in the dominant travel directions alongside underutilized road capacity in opposite directions.
Variable Lane Control refers to a traffic management method where the permitted travel direction of vehicles on a certain lane at signalized intersections can be dynamically reconfigured. Enabled by overhead variable message signs indicating lane functionality, the permitted traffic flow direction on such lane may alternate during different periods of a single day. This control strategy enhances road utilization efficiency, accommodates changing traffic demands, and alleviates congestion through flexible flow redistribution and reversible lane direction adjustments.
Key features include:
1. Unbalanced two-way traffic capacity;
2. Real-time lane direction reconfiguration capability that dynamically adapts to tidal flow traffic volumes during morning/evening peak hours.

Deployment Method
(1)Install one MPD093 radar-video-geomagnetic integrated detector on the electronic police monitoring pole at each of the four directions of the intersection, ensuring all detectors face incoming traffic flow
(2)Deploy two geomagnetic detectors at approximately 70m upstream from the stop line on the left-turn lane approach, functioning as queue dissipation detectors
(3)The installation position of the repeater must enable it to cover the view and range of the geomagnetic detectors/radar-video-geomagnetic integrated microwave detectors supported by the repeater without obstruction. The maximum distance between the repeater and the radar-video-geomagnetic integrated detector is 310m. Therefore, the repeater can be installed at any position as long as it can provide good signal coverage to the radar-video-geomagnetic integrated detectors/geomagnetic detectors.
Configure the dynamic lane control system to automatically reconfigure the reversible lane to a left-turn lane when queue length exceeds 200 meters and waiting time surpasses 10 seconds; concurrently, trigger automatic reversion to a straight lane when queue length drops below 70 meters.
